Students practice foundational skills from Algebra 1 and prepare for Geometry and Algebra 2. They focus on concepts needed to propel them through advanced math, such as functions, graphing, angles, and foundational number theory. They also explore unique geometry topics such as topology, knot theory, and compass and straightedge constructions.

This course is designed for students who have completed Algebra 1 or an equivalent math class.

Class Experience

Each day of Math Camp 8-9 consists of a Problem Solving component and a Mathematical Exploration component. Problem Solving keeps students sharp on particular topics while preparing them for the upcoming school year. Each lesson includes a quick review of a key topic from algebra 1, followed by a series of intriguing problems that push understanding well beyond the standard algebra 1 level.

Our Mathematical Explorations are designed to introduce topics that most students don't encounter until much later in their schooling, and to equip students with general mathematical strategies that will be useful throughout their education. Students explore topology, knot theory, and the geometry of surfaces. They also examine different techniques for geometric constructions, including compass and straightedge and origami. Finally, they investigate more exotic facets of geometry including finite geometry and fractal geometry.
